This is the classic kind of stupid shit to blog about that predates duck-face selfies, and I'm here for it.
Almost three months ago, I had to tear into my fridge and melt the iced up coil. I didn't get all of it, because there was this piece of foam over the coil that I couldn't remove. I believe the ice was stuck to it. Anyway, ice started to form again, so I pulled out all of the crap and went at it again. This time, I got it all.
There are a few reasons this happens. One is a bad heater coil. Related, a bad temperature sensor that turns off the coil when it's warm enough. If the fan that pulls air over the coils doesn't work, that's another thing. Fortunately, the fridge seems willing to tell you about a bad sensor, and you can also manually run the fan from the diagnostics. It's not the fan or the sensor, so maybe it's the heater. I don't know because I couldn't get to any obvious place to test for current flowing through it. The other thing it could be is a bad seal on the door, which also doesn't seem obvious.
It's certainly possible for it to just accumulate ice over time for no other reason than we the air is humid or the door is open too much. The heater can only go so warm for so long before it's heating the food, so there are limits to the system. Hopefully that's it, and me not getting it all the first time was the issue.
Homeownership, am I right?
